Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDs)

Sustainable Drainage Systems have been designed to be environmentally beneficial whilst resolving surface water issues on many newly constructed housing estates, retail and business parks and also large new road networks.

SuDs Maintenance

Sustainable Drainage Systems are designed to manage surface water runoff in an environmentally sensitive way, and are now a common feature of new housing developments, retail and business parks, and major road schemes. When well maintained, they provide genuine ecological benefits — creating wildlife habitat, reducing flood risk, filtering pollutants, and enhancing the appearance of a development. When neglected, they can quickly become overgrown and lose much of their effectiveness.

The Maintenance Challenge

Most SuDS ponds are planted with reeds or bulrushes around the margins — species chosen specifically for their ability to filter pollutants from surface water runoff. The problem is that both are vigorous growers. Without regular management, they spread rapidly inward, reducing the water-holding capacity of the pond and undermining the drainage function the system was designed to deliver.

Why Truxors Are Ideal for SuDS Maintenance

Aquatic Solutions UK operates the largest fleet of Truxor amphibious machines in the UK, and SuDS ponds are a natural fit for what Truxors do best.

At just 1,400kg, the Truxor is significantly lighter than conventional excavation plant — an important consideration on the soft, landscaped margins typical of SuDS sites. Its tracked system allows it to travel across land and directly into the water with minimal disturbance to the surrounding vegetation and ground surface. Being fully amphibious, it can drive straight from the trailer into the water without specialist access equipment or bank preparation.

Truxors are particularly well suited to the smaller, shallower waterbodies characteristic of SuDS schemes — allowing us to carry out reed and bulrush removal, silt management, and vegetation control efficiently and with low ecological impact.
