Water Lily Control For Lakes & Ponds

Water lilies are a valued part of many aquatic environments — providing shade, shelter and cooler water for fish and invertebrates, while helping to filter and detoxify the water. However, in nutrient-rich conditions they can spread rapidly, and without regular management they can cover an entire water surface within a matter of weeks. This reduces light penetration significantly, leading to the decline of other aquatic plants, invertebrates and fish.

Aquatic Solutions UK provides professional water lily control for lakes and ponds of all sizes, helping maintain a healthy balance between coverage and open water.

Effective Water Lily Control

The two most common species found in UK waterbodies are Nuphar (Yellow Water Lily) and Nymphaea (White Water Lily). Both are identifiable by their distinctive floating leaves — Nuphar has oval leaves, while Nymphaea produces round leaves with a slight overlap behind the stalk — and can be distinguished before flowering on this basis alone.

Lilies can grow in water up to 5 metres deep, though they prefer depths of around 1–3 metres. Their extensive rhizome root systems allow them to spread broadly across the bed, and if left unmanaged they will form a dense surface canopy that suppresses all other aquatic vegetation beneath. The problem tends to be most pronounced during warmer summer months, when growth accelerates.

How We Control Water Lilies

Water lily control is necessary as they can completely cover the surface in just a few short weeks, reducing light penetration, resulting in the decline of fish, invertebrates and aquatic plants.

Rhizome Removal – Our Preferred Method

Excavating the rhizome root system using the Truxor is the most effective long-term solution. By removing the root mass directly, we eliminate the primary driver of regrowth — and any volunteer growth that does return is far easier to manage subsequently. Where complete eradication is the goal, this is the method we recommend.

Lily Cutting Using the Cutter Bar

For clients who need a quicker visual result, the Truxor’s cutter bar can cut lily stems at depths of around 6ft, with cut stems floating to the surface for collection and removal. This is a more temporary measure, as it leaves the rhizome system intact and regrowth will follow — but it can be appropriate as part of an ongoing management programme or where immediate improvement is needed.
