Reed & Bulrush Control

Reeds and bulrushes are a natural and valuable part of many wetland environments — but left unmanaged, certain species can spread aggressively, dramatically altering the character and ecology of a watercourse. Aquatic Solutions UK provides specialist reed and bulrush control using Truxor amphibious machines, working directly in the water to remove vegetation without disturbing the bank or surrounding land.

Sustainable drainage system maintenance

Phragmites

Phragmites australis — commonly known as Common Reed or Norfolk Reed — is one of the most invasive aquatic plant species in the UK. Its extensive rhizome root system spreads rapidly, drawing moisture from the surrounding area and gradually converting open water back to dry land if left unchecked.

Most control methods leave the rhizome system intact, which limits their long-term effectiveness. Our preferred approach is to use the Truxor to grub out the rhizome mass directly. This severely weakens the plant and significantly reduces regrowth, making any follow-up maintenance — whether cutting or herbicide treatment — far more effective and cost-efficient over time.

Bulrush control

Typha/Bulrush

Bulrush (Typha) is a perennial plant found in and around static and flowing water, and on marshy ground. Once established in shallow water, its roots trap silt, impeding or diverting water flow — and as silt builds up, bulrush can colonise progressively deeper water, spreading further into areas it couldn’t previously sustain itself.

For bulrush control and removal, the Truxor is fitted with its clamshell bucket to extract the plant by the roots. The uprooted material is left to float before the rake attachment is used to lift all vegetation clear of the water. While seeds present in the silt mean some future regrowth is inevitable, whole-plant removal gives far greater control over that regrowth than cutting alone.
