Algae and Blanketweed

Algae problems blanketweed control

Algae or Blanketweed is unsightly and increasing in waters due to nutrient concentration as a result of human activity and natural processes. It needs controlling to ensure water quality is clean enough for environmental, recreational and health reasons.

Problems caused by Algae and Blanketweed:

  • Impedes the flow into drainage systems
  • Blocks pumps, sluices and filters
  • Interferes with navigation, fishing and recreational activity
  • Causes taint and odour problems
  • A health hazard to humans, livestock and wildlife

Waters should be treated sooner rather than later – Herbicidal treatment and mechanical removal are not options for controlling the algae problems or blanketweed control you might have in your lake. (Blue Green Algae and Blanketweed Filamentous)

Algae and Blanketweed Information:

  • Occurs in Shallow lakes (less than 6ft/2m) as they receive light at the bottom of the lake
  • Phosphorus is the single greatest contributor to aquatic plant growth.
  • 1g of Phosphorus supports 100g of algae.
  • Foaming is an indication of excess phosphorus.
  • Three most common nutrient sources are
    • Sediment and vegetation in lake.
    • Run off water from surrounding areas
    • Incoming water.
  • Simple algae reproduces as often as every 20 minutes and has a two week life cycle.
  • Dead algae sinks to the bottom of the lake adding to Biomass.
  • At a mid-range sediment accumulation rate of 3in or 8cm/ year.
  • Storage capacity of the lake will be lost at a rate of 300m³/4000m² surface area.

At Aquatic Solutions we recommend algae control and blanketweed control using barley straw rafts and aeration, as they are natural environmentally friendly methods of controlling algae problems in UK waters.

How Barley Straw Works – As it starts to decompose it releases a natural chemical into the water which inhibits the growth of algae. The straw raft lasts for as long as the straw takes to decompose, usually between 4-10 months depending on water temperature. The effects of decomposition has no effect to fish or invertebrates within the lake, in fact oxygenated straw provides a good habitat to feed fish.

How Aeration Works -

  • Aeration is the addition of dissolved oxygen to the water.
  • Aerators move large volumes of water and add oxygen to the water.
  • The second component of aeration is mixing and de-stratification.
  • Improves water quality by impacting on 3 factors:
    • Oxygen: aeration encourages aerobic digestion of nutrients by adding oxygen.
    • Nutrients: these are kept in balance through digestion and oxidation.
    • Temperature: mixing breaks down stratification adding oxygen to lower levels.
  • Introduction of oxygen prevents anaerobic digestion and foul odours.
  • Oxygen introduced at lake bottom inhibits phosphorus release from sediment.
  • Oxygen in water converts phosphorus to an insoluble form.

Other Controls Here are some other methods for controlling algae problems in UK waters;

  • Dyes
  • Microbial Treatment
  • Introduction of Grass Carp (requires approval of the Environmenal Agency)
