Water Lily Control

Water lily control and Weed Control in Ponds

Water lilies do several things to improve the quality of lakes and ponds. Providing shade, shelter and cooler water for fish or invertebrates they also filter or detoxify the water. They grow rapidly just like many other aquatic plants especially when there is an excess of nutrients in the pond water.

Water lily control is necessary as they can completely cover the surface in just a few short weeks reducing light penetration resulting in the decline of  fish, invertebrates and aquatic plants.

This problem will be more evident with warmer waters during summer months which means they need to be regularly maintained and pruned, so as not to be a disadvantage for a pond.

Spraying is one method of water lily control, it needs approval of the Environment Agency and can be more expensive as it requires qualified operators who are licensed to spray herbicides from a boat (which we have). Often repeat applications are needed. It has an added problem of rotting vegetation in the lake, which can cause de-oxygenation and increased nutrient build up.

Lily Removal with Truxor

Our recommended method  of water lily control which will give the best weed control  by far is to use the excavator attachment on  our Truxor amphibious machine and literally grub out the rhizomes of the lilies. It also allows for more accurate shaping of  areas you require and by removing the root system it has instant impact and longer lasting results.

If you’d like to learn more about how we can help with water lily control or any other weed control in ponds or lakes, contact us for an informal chat to discuss the areas that interest you.

We will have a conversation with you so we can learn more about your needs. We utilise Google Earth or you can attach pictures (below) of the area to help discuss any project with us in more clarity and detail.

All of our water lily control quotations are provided free of charge and in the case of larger jobs we would undertake a site survey.

Due to the size and extent of lily rhizomes it is almost impossible to remove every last fragment of the root system. As such, there is the possibility that some regrowth may appear. If this is the case we would recommend applying some approved herbicide to any pads that appear. In some cases, a second removal visit may be necessary to fully eradicate the lilies if the rhizome system is particularly tough.
